What is Notion?

Notion is the name of the web-based tool used to streamline the function of several different online tools that are typically used for collaboration. In plain language? Notion is an app that will change the way professionals organize everything by bringing all the tools that theyneed to one place.

Take notes in a meeting, share them with co-workers, assign tasks, create spreadsheets, and collaborate in real-time. All of this is possible with Notion.so. It’s a tool that is founded on the premise that users should be able to build whatever they need to when using it.

Notion is on track to outpace all web apps in terms of functionality and accessibility. It is so feature-rich that there aren’t many things that one can’t do with it. Notion will become an invaluable tool capable of keeping everything organized for both teams an individuals.

Getting Started with Notion

Setting up a Notion account is uniform across all devices. Users need an email address to get started. Notion asks for a little information about them first.

Notion asks users to answer simple questions regarding their occupation and they’ll get to choose between a set list of how they think that they’ll use the app. Using the mobile app is only slightly different, in addition to the questions users will also get a screen showing a brief tutorial on how to navigate the app.

After they become official a members of the Notion.so community, users must ask themselves what they want Notion to do for them. Think of Notion as an all-purpose tool to get one started on whatever they’ve got in mind. Seriously, check out Notion Pages to get an idea of just how versatile this app really is.

Notion uses what it calls “blocks” to help users build what they need. From Notion HQ:

“A block is any single piece of content you add to your page, like a to-do item, an image, a code block, an embedded file, etc. Think of your page as being made up of these building blocks.”

What users do with their blocks is up to them. Notion’s free pricing offers 1,000 blocks to users. They can even delete blocks to free up space.

How to use Notion

The team at Notion has done a great job of making sure that it’s users are not overwhelmed. In fact, about 20 minutes after a new user has signed up, expect an email from Ivan at Notion.so. His email mentions how feature-rich Notion is and provides new users with a handy tutorial on how to use it.

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to Notion is that it’s meant to work for you. It’s unique in that it allows seemingly endless customization. Here are some very important customization tools to try out:

  • Workplace URL – Collaborative projects should no longer be dreaded. Users have the unique option of creating a workplace URL that only people from their allowed email address domain can enter. Keep the workspace private and collaborate in real-time.
  • Templates – Let’s be honest, sometimes when there is too much possibility, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by it. Users can choose from basic coding, calendar, blank post, database and more to create the information hub that they need.
  • Sync Across Platforms – Notion works across multiple platforms, users will find everything that they need is where they need it. Whether that be on a bus or at a desk. Downloading the mobile app means that users will have an entire workplace at their fingertips.

Customize Notion's Blocks

Notion makes customization simple. Blocks can be used to build whatever is needed. For example, a single block can function as simple text, an image, an item on a to-do list, or even an entire blog post.

Users start off by creating a single page which will function as their first block. This page can be edited however they’d like. Users can also embed media such as videos, photos, files, code, audio, and more. For starters, users should try creating a sample page to see how all of the tools can work for them.
